WebP typically encodes the same photograph in 25 to 40 percent fewer bytes than JPG at matched visual quality. On an image heavy page that is the difference between a slow first load and a quick one, and every current browser supports it.

Check the numbers, do not assume

WebP does not always win. On dense, noisy artwork it can come out level or even larger than a well tuned JPG. The result card shows the before and after size for each file, so keep the WebP when it is smaller and keep your JPG when it is not.

JPG to WEBP: common questions

Do all browsers support WebP?

Yes, every current browser does, including Safari since 2020. Only genuinely old software is a problem, which is why keeping a JPG fallback is still common practice for public sites.

What quality should I use?

The default is 82 percent, which is the usual sweet spot for photographs on the web. Raise it towards 90 for hero images with fine detail, and lower it for thumbnails.

Will converting improve the original photo?

No. Detail that the JPG already discarded cannot come back. What you gain is a smaller file at the same apparent quality.

Is it done locally?

Yes. Your browser encodes the WebP, so no image is uploaded and the tool works with the network off.
