Choosing between JPG, PNG and WebP

JPG throws away detail your eye is unlikely to miss, which makes photographs small. PNG keeps every pixel and supports transparency, which makes screenshots, logos and diagrams crisp and rather large. WebP does both jobs in fewer bytes and every current browser supports it, which makes it the right default for anything destined for a web page. HEIC is the iPhone camera format: efficient, and awkward everywhere outside Apple software.

These conversions happen on your device

Every image tool on this page uses the image decoder and encoder already built into your browser, so the picture is read, converted and written back without ever being transmitted. There is no upload progress bar because there is no upload, the tools keep working with the network disconnected, and there is nothing on our side to store, log or delete.

Do the image tools upload my photos?

No. Every image converter here runs inside your browser using its built in image support, so the photo is never transmitted and there is no server copy to delete.

Which format should I convert to?

JPG for photographs you need to send or publish, PNG when you need transparency or a lossless copy to edit, and WebP when the image is for a website and you want the smallest file at the same quality.

Will converting lose quality?

Converting to PNG is lossless. Converting to JPG or WebP re-encodes the image, which costs a little, though not visibly at the default quality settings. Converting the same image back and forth repeatedly is what causes visible damage.
