Privacy policy

The short version: most conversions never leave your device, anything that does is deleted within an hour, there is no account, and the ads that pay for the site are never given your files.

1. Files you convert in your browser

27 of our 27 tools run entirely on your own device. The page reads the file you select using standard browser features, converts it, and hands the result back to you. Nothing is transmitted to us or to anyone else, no copy exists outside your computer, and we have no way to see, store or recover the file. These tools are labelled Runs in your browser in their panel, and do not send your file to a conversion server. Keep your connection until the conversion libraries have loaded on first use.

2. No conversion uploads

All 27 converters run inside your browser. No files are uploaded, stored or processed on a conversion server.

3. What we log

Our web server keeps standard access logs: the page requested, a timestamp, the HTTP status, the browser user agent string and an IP address. These exist to keep the service running and to spot abuse, they are not linked to any file you converted, and are managed by the server log rotation settings. We do not build profiles, we do not fingerprint devices, and we do not attempt to identify individual visitors.

4. Cookies and third parties

FileFormatLab sets no cookies of its own and runs no analytics service. The pages do carry advertising supplied by Google AdSense, and Google's ad code sets its own cookies and reads device identifiers. That is set out in the next section.

Beyond Google's advertising there is no analytics service, no social widget and no font loaded from another company. Everything else the page needs comes from this domain.

5. Advertising

The site is paid for by advertising served by Google AdSense. Google and its partners use cookies and similar device identifiers to serve those ads, to measure them, and to limit how often you see the same one. Where you have allowed it, ads may be personalised using your earlier visits to this site and to other sites.

The important limit, and the reason this section is worth reading: your files are never given to Google or to any advertiser. We do not pass the ad code the contents of a file, its name, its size or its type, and we do not tell it which conversion you ran. Files handled by the 27 browser based tools never leave your device at all, and that is unchanged by the presence of ads on the page.

You can control this:

  • Personalised advertising can be turned off for your Google account at Google Ads Settings. Ads still appear, but are no longer based on your interests.
  • Google explains what it collects when it serves ads on partner sites at policies.google.com/technologies/ads.
  • Industry wide opt outs are available at aboutads.info and Your Online Choices in Europe.
  • A browser content blocker will stop the ad code loading. Every converter on this site works normally with one running, and we do not detect or ask you to disable it.

If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, you are asked for consent before personalised advertising cookies are set, through a consent management platform certified by Google. You can change or withdraw that choice at any time from the link in the footer of the consent dialog.

We do not sell personal information, and we run no advertising of our own beyond the Google tag described here.

6. Google Drive import

Google Drive import is not available yet. The site does not load the Google picker or request access to your Drive. Download a file to your device, then use Choose Files.

7. No accounts

There is nothing to sign up for. We do not collect your name, your email address or a password, which means there is no account database to breach and no history of your conversions to hand over to anyone. If you email us, that email is a normal email and is kept only as long as needed to answer it.

8. Children

The service is a general purpose utility and is not directed at children. We collect no personal information from anyone directly, and Google is instructed to treat this site as general audience content.

9. Your rights

Because we hold no accounts and no file contents, there is normally nothing for us to export or erase on request. Data held by Google in connection with advertising is held by Google, and the links in the advertising section above are the route to controlling it. If you believe we hold something relating to you, write to hello@fileformatlab.com and we will look and tell you honestly.

10. Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it. We will not quietly weaken the deletion window or add a tracker without saying so on this page.
