About this converter

Why WAV files are enormous

WAV stores raw, uncompressed audio: about 10 MB per minute in CD quality. That is right for recording and editing and impractical for sending or carrying around. MP3 at 192 kbps holds the same minute in roughly 1.4 MB.

Keep the master

MP3 is lossy, so treat the conversion as producing a distribution copy and keep the WAV as your master. If you plan to edit further, edit the WAV and export a fresh MP3 at the end rather than editing the MP3 and saving it again.

WAV to MP3: common questions

Which bitrate should I pick?

192 kbps is a safe default. Use 320 kbps for music, and 128 kbps for interviews, voice notes and anything spoken.

Can I convert a batch of recordings?

Yes. Add several WAV files and each converts to its own MP3, with a ZIP download for the whole set.

Is AIFF supported too?

Yes. AIFF is the Apple equivalent of WAV and is accepted here alongside it.

Will the volume change?

No. Levels are carried across as they are, with no normalisation applied, so a quiet recording stays quiet and a loud one is not clipped.
