How to convert CSV to JSON

Parsed properly, not split on commas

Real world CSV is full of traps: commas inside quoted fields, escaped quotes, line breaks within a cell, and a stray byte order mark at the start of the file from Excel. A naive split on commas breaks on all of them. This converter reads the format as specified, so a field like "Smith, John" arrives as one value.

Types and shape

The first row becomes the object keys. Values that are unambiguously numbers or true and false are converted, and everything else stays a string, because guessing too eagerly is how a product code such as 0071 turns into 71. Empty cells become empty strings rather than disappearing, so every object has the same keys.

CSV to JSON: common questions

Are tab separated files supported?

Yes. Comma, semicolon and tab separated files are all read, and the separator is detected from the header row.

What happens to my data?

It stays on your device. Parsing happens in your browser, which also means a customer export or a finance report is never transmitted anywhere.

Can I get one object per line instead of an array?

The output is a formatted JSON array, which is what most tools expect. For newline delimited JSON, strip the outer brackets and the trailing commas from the result.

Does it handle a very large CSV?

Files of a few hundred thousand rows are fine on a desktop. The whole file is read into memory, so on a phone stay well below that.
