How to convert PDF to TXT

Extracting existing PDF text

Copying out of a PDF viewer often interleaves columns and drops line breaks, because the file stores text as positioned fragments rather than sentences. This tool reads the text fragments supplied by the PDF and preserves available line breaks. Multi-column layouts and tables may need manual cleanup; a correct reading order is not guaranteed.

What plain text cannot carry

Fonts, colours, images and tables have no representation in a .txt file. Available line breaks and gaps between pages are kept, but tables and complex layouts may need editing. Keep the PDF if you need its appearance, or export page images with PDF to JPG.

PDF to TXT: common questions

Does it work on scanned PDFs?

No OCR is performed. A scan needs an existing searchable text layer; image-only PDFs contain no text to extract. Use an OCR tool first, then return with the searchable PDF.

Is the page order preserved?

Yes. Pages appear in document order with a blank line between them, so the text lines up with the original.

Which encoding is used?

UTF-8, so accented characters, currency symbols and non Latin scripts all survive intact.

Can I extract text from several PDFs at once?

Yes. Add up to 20 files and each produces its own .txt file, with a ZIP download for the batch.
