Reading order, not column soup

Copying out of a PDF viewer often interleaves columns and drops line breaks, because the file stores text as positioned fragments rather than sentences. Extraction here reconstructs the reading order, so a two column paper comes out as two readable columns one after the other instead of alternating lines.

What plain text cannot carry

Fonts, colours, images and tables have no representation in a .txt file. Line breaks and the gap between pages are kept, so the reading order survives, but a table arrives as its rows of text rather than as a grid. If you need the layout, PDF to Word is the tool you want.

PDF to TXT: common questions

Does it work on scanned PDFs?

A scan holds images rather than characters, so text recognition has to read it first. That runs automatically, and accuracy depends on the scan quality.

Is the page order preserved?

Yes. Pages appear in document order with a blank line between them, so the text lines up with the original.

Which encoding is used?

UTF-8, so accented characters, currency symbols and non Latin scripts all survive intact.

Can I extract text from several PDFs at once?
