One file instead of many

A ZIP archive is the lowest common denominator for moving a set of files: every operating system opens one without extra software, email systems accept them, and upload forms with a single slot are satisfied by one. Compression is a bonus rather than the point. Text, documents and spreadsheets shrink substantially, while photographs and video are already compressed and are stored as they are instead.

Packed and unpacked on your device

Both archive tools use the compression and decompression built into your browser, so nothing is transmitted. That makes them genuinely useful on a phone or a locked down work computer, where there is no unzip utility and no way to install one. Filenames are written in UTF-8, so accented and non Latin names survive the round trip.

Archive conversion: common questions

Can I password protect a ZIP?

Not here. Encrypted ZIP support varies between unpacking tools and the protection is weak. For anything sensitive, use a service with real end to end encryption.

Are RAR and 7z supported?

No, only standard ZIP archives. RAR and 7z are different formats with their own licensing and compression, and a browser cannot read them without a large library.

Do the archive tools upload my files?

No. Both packing and unpacking use the compression built into your browser, so the files stay on your device throughout.
